What we believe.

We believe in simplicity, clean and functional design and quality craftsmanship. We craft furniture that is built to last and complement the aesthetic of your home as a whole — with hope that each piece sees decades of adventures.  A departure from the throwaway culture of children’s furniture, our furniture is meant to be displayed proudly and move throughout your home as your children do.

We value our planet and and have taken thoughtful and intentional steps to ensure our furniture is responsibly made to protect your children and their future environment. And, we think your time is precious which is why all of our furniture comes assembled, so you and your little ones can get right to story time.

The difference is in the details.

Our Materials

Hardwood Frames

Our Walnut and Ash hardwood frames are built from responsibly sourced wood from small local mills in upstate New York and finished by hand.

For the Walnut and Ash frames, we use all natural, Tried & True Wood Finishes that are composed of 100% renewable ingredients coming from trees, bees and seeds — 100% solvent free, contain zero VOC’s and safe for food contact.

Finishes

Baltic Birch frames are finished with Osmo Polyx-Oil, a Hardwax-Oil that is derived from natural vegetable oils and waxes. Resistant to dirt, liquid spills and abrasion, the finish is smooth, and will not crack, flake, peel or bubble. In comparison to conventional finishes, the use of plant ingredients creates a more evenly colored and more harmonious appearance. The finish is non-toxic and safe for children, animals and plants.

Fabrics

Durable, easily spot-cleanable and machine washable.

Cushion covers are manufactured using ultra-microfiber made with partially plant based polyester using non-edible plants, our material is sourced from UltraSuede®, an innovative materials company working to contribute to building a carbon-neutral society as they work towards the development of a 100% plant based material.

Leathers

We use 7-ounce vegetable tanned Wickett and Craig Leathers, a company that prides itself in it’s natural, eco-friendly processes producing superior leathers that are full of character. Leather ages beautifully with use, and is cleaned simply with a damp cloth.

Baltic Birch

Our Baltic Birch frames are constructed of 13 layer plywood that is certified by both the FSC (Forest Steward Council) and CARB (California Air Resources Board), ensuring trees were responsibly grown and harvested and that the bonding is free of toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde.

Shipping Materials

Our packaging is made from 100% recycled material and we hope you’ll give it one more use. It all started with a broken printer.

How we got here.

As a inquisitive toddler, every morning, my daughter would walk into our bedroom and perch on our printer. As she grew, the printer didn’t, and the paper tray no longer cut it as a spot for her to nestle.

So, I started to build her a chair. And in that process discovered the following were vital in creating a long lasting, sustainably made piece of furniture that truly belonged in any room of our home and would grow as she did.

Timeless — It needed to be a piece of lasting value that could be used for years, by more than one child, something to be passed down. Durable — It needed to be more inviting and structurally sound than a printer. So I built a wooden frame, and upholstered cushions with sustainable materials that could be removed, cleaned, and interchanged as her style evolved. Beautiful — The design needed to compliment the aesthetic of our home. No more tucking items away before guests arrive. Clean — The materials and craftsmanship needed to have an emphasis on environmental respect to protect her and her future environment.  Mobile — She is rarely static, the chair needed to be light and easy enough for her to move on her own. Inviting — Even little ones deserve a bit of luxury. I chose fun, bright colors of soft Ultrasuede® that she loves to cozy up with.

I built her the Chair, and quickly realized I was not alone in needing it. Franklin+Emily now has a collection designed around how children play and interact with furniture. As the collection has grown, each piece has been designed and built to work together as a family. This family of furnishings will live in your home as you do. Not in one room, but throughout the house — moving with and by your children, as they do.
